The odor from your holding tank vent is a combination of two things: hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) — the rotten-egg gas produced by anaerobic decomposition — and raw sewage odor, which escapes through the vent line every time the tank is disturbed. Conventional single-chamber filters channel the flow and saturate quickly, often needing full replacement each season. If you have the room to fit the Nautilus Filter™ Pro model, this is typically the best choice when replacing common Dometic, SeaLand, SaniGard, Vokera, Yacht Z Marine, or Camco branded holding tank vent filters. This is because the Pro model is larger in diameter, which reduces vent air resistance to almost zero.

Conventional holding tank vent filters (skinny and long) have significant resistance to airflow — and this is a problem, especially since they don't have a built-in bypass valve to allow free air flow back into the holding tank. That resistance can contribute to tank collapse during aggressive pump-outs.

Even the Nautilus Filter™ OEM model has more airflow resistance than the Pro model, but still less (better) than those common alternative brands — and since the OEM model has a built-in bypass valve, it helps prevent the possibility of tank collapse.

Do holding tank vent filters actually work?▼
Yes — when the carbon has sufficient contact time with the gas and is fresh. Most conventional filters fail because they use a single carbon chamber that channels airflow and saturates quickly. Does the Nautilus Filter eliminate odors inside the boat head or cabin?▼
No. The Nautilus Filter™ removes holding tank vent odors exhausted outside the boat during flushing. Interior odors usually come from permeated sanitation hoses between the toilet and holding tank, or from the pump-out fitting. If you're smelling odor inside the cabin, check your sanitation hose condition first.
Will the filter restrict airflow or cause my tank to collapse?▼
It depends on the model. The Pro model has near-zero airflow restriction — the larger carbon volume and chamber design allow air to pass freely under normal use. The OEM model has a slight restriction due to its compact bracket-fit design, though it still outperforms OEM competitors. Both models include a built-in bypass valve that helps to prevent tank collapse during aggressive pump-outs.
Is it compatible with my existing Dometic, SeaLand, or SaniGard system?▼
Both models are compatible with hose systems used on Dometic, SeaLand, SaniGard, Vokera, Yacht Z Marine, and Camco installations — the 5/8", 3/4", and 3/4" threaded (Dometic) fittings cover the vast majority of production boats. The Pro model is not yet an exact bracket drop-in. If you need a direct bracket replacement, choose the OEM model. How often do I need to refill the carbon?▼
For most boaters in seasonal climates, once per year during spring boat maintenance is sufficient. Year-round boaters may need two refills. Pro Carbon Refill: ~$39/season.
